When you see a elderly people, Let’s assess him/her with CGA !
I had the course “Aged society and advanced age care” for the 4th grade medical students on 26 April in Uni. of Tsukuba.
I gave some themes about Aged society to the students and made them discuss it with each other.
After that, I gave a lecture “The feature of Japanese aged society, What cause the problem increasing of advanced age population in urban areas, and I teached the most important view when you provide the medical care for elderly people.
In particular, using the assessment tool “CGA: Comprehensive Geriatric Assessment” to care for elderly people is very important.
I present the virtual case to the following students:
92 years old women, she was admitted for a pneumonia.
She will be discharged and will go back to her home, because she has recovered.
A physician noticed she always uses wheel chair in the hospital recently.
The physician wondered can she go back to her home in this situation ?
Because she could walk and living alone in her home before this episode.
If you were the physician, how do you manage her best support and set up her living environment ?
I asked the students and let the students discussed it with each other again.
Using CGA the comprehensive assessment tool for elderly people, we can get the following information about her.
Activity of Daily Living, mental status, her economical status, how she needs livelihood support and so on.
